Mike Hayes

Dr. Mike Hayes is a lecturer at Mahidol University’s Institute for Human Rights and Peace Studies (IHRP), where he has taught since 2002, and Vice President of the Global Campus of Human Rights for the Asia-Pacific program based at Mahidol. He has helped build regional ecosystems for human rights education—strengthening university networks, mentoring faculty, and creating courses that connect rights, development, and social justice across Southeast Asia. A long-time advocate for migrant and refugee rights, he designs and delivers research and training with refugee organizations and migrant worker groups, and most recently has supported human-rights education for Myanmar students and lecturers displaced by the coup. His research spans human rights protection mechanisms, migration and the rights of migrants, rights-based development, and human rights education. He has authored and co-edited widely, including the SEAHRN undergraduate human rights textbooks, chapters on business and human rights, and articles in the Global Campus Human Rights Journal and the Asian and Pacific Migration Journal. At Mahidol, he teaches across MA and PhD programs and has developed courses such as Human Rights Protection Mechanisms, Human Rights Theory, and Research Methods for Human Rights. Previously, he lectured at RMIT University (Australia) and served as Visiting Professor at Kasetsart University (Thailand). He holds a PhD in Communication and Cultural Studies from the University of Wollongong.
