Nang Kham Naw
Nang Kham Naw is a public health practitioner working to improve access to quality healthcare for communities affected by conflict and displacement in Myanmar. She is a Project Officer with a local NGO, providing life-saving humanitarian aid and health services in conflict-affected areas, particularly in the Sagaing Region. In her role, she supports the full project cycle, while coordinating with local partners and volunteer teams to strengthen service delivery and data systems for continuous improvement.
Nang’s commitment to health equity is grounded in lived experience and early field exposure. Growing up as a minority in Northern Shan State, she witnessed how instability and displacement deepen inequities in access to care. As a medical student, she joined an outreach visit to a remote area where communities lacked basic health education and standard health services. Seeing the profound impact of these gaps became a turning point, shaping her decision to focus on public health and underserved populations. She has supported displaced and refugee communities across multiple contexts, from Northern Shan State to camps along the Myanmar–Thailand border, and most recently in Sagaing Region.
A notable achievement was leading a tuberculosis (TB) intervention project in a refugee camp, where she developed a structured implementation plan and strengthened monitoring and evaluation systems. The project achieved a treatment success rate of over 90% while maintaining low dropout and mortality rates. She also addressed diagnostic inequities by coordinating with partners to secure access to GeneXpert testing for camp patients, services commonly available outside the camps, improving timely diagnosis and retention in care.
Looking ahead, she aims to deepen community-led health system strengthening in conflict settings by expanding workforce capacity, improving quality and accountability through better data, and ensuring displaced populations can access safe, equitable care even in protracted crises.
